The Centenary of the Communist Party of China is here

June 25, 2021

China is ramping up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China.

A range of special events are underway including an art exhibition displaying 100 classical art pieces marking the CPC's historical moments in the timeline of the last century, a new museum dedicated to the Party in Beijing and a colorful light shows in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

Over the past century the CPC has strived to transform the lives of Chinese citizens for the better. Here's how some people on the streets of China define "a good life".

Since the founding of the Communist Party of China in 1921, the Middle Kingdom has grown by leaps and bounds. And the concept of a billion seems to take on special significance.

CGTN’s Gerald Tan offers this look at some notable milestones.

Through Their Eyes on China

In a special series dedicated to this historical achievement, CGTN has produced profiles on people from around the world who have had a special connection to China and its people.

  • In 1931, a young woman from rural southern Utah had a dream of writing the great American novel. Helen Foster’s mother gave her daughter a simple Kodak camera and challenged Foster to see the world. Helen went to China and her work would end up having an impact for decades to come.
  • CGTN’s Luis Chirino recently interviewed Jose Luis Robaina, a former Cuban journalist and diplomat who spent a lifetime studying Chinese history, both as a former reporter in Beijing and as a diplomat at the Cuban Embassy. Robaina says China has become the world’s second largest economy thanks to its leadership and reforms.
  • In 1944 a plane carrying a group of U.S. observers touched down in Yan’an, China, home base of the Communists, led by Mao Zedong. This U.S. operation came to be known as “The Dixie Mission.” CGTN’s Jim Spellman has the story of what many historians consider a lost opportunity for U.S.-China relations.

The Art of the Party

In a second series produced by CGTN, "The Art of the Party" chronicles the historic moments of the Party in the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the Party's founding. Here are some of the latest episodes:

  • May 4, 1919 is a significant date in Chinese history. It’s the day a student protest took place in Beijing and set off what came to be known as the May Fourth Movement.
  • The oil painting "Setting Sail - the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China" shows delegates of the Communist Party of China (CPC) boarding a boat on Nanhu Lake in China's Jiaxing city in 1921 to hold a meeting where delegates elected the Central Bureau of the Party and passed the first constitution. In 1938, the first day of July was officially designated as the birth of the CPC.
  • Xiao Chuanjiu, one of the most famous sculptors in modern China, created "August 1 Nanchang Uprising" in 1927 - the first military action by the Red Army in China's Civil War. Each year, on August 1, China celebrates Army Day, a national holiday honoring the Nanchang Uprising... and the birth of the PLA.

Stay tuned to CGTN  over the next week for more coverage of the centenary of the Communist Party of China.
