Open and Transparent: Forest data setting the course for green future under the Paris Agreement

BACKGROUND

This international technical webinar is part of the series organized by the FAO eLearning AcademyAgreenium (l'Institut agronomique, vétérinaire et forestier de France) and UN-ESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific).  These webinars are an opportunity for all of us to share experiences and lessons learnt, discuss challenges, and propose innovative solutions and models. They aim to provide a holistic and comprehensive view of current trends in thematic areas related to global challenges, by combining development research and innovation perspectives.


OBJECTIVES OF THE SESSION

·        Discuss the importance of the Enhanced Transparency Framework under Article 13 of the Paris Agreement and the contribution of forests

·        Introduce the Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) to support the Paris Agreement implementation

·        Present the CBIT-Forest global project and launch of three brand new E- learning modules of the e-learning course “Forests and transparency under the Paris Agreement”

This technical webinar will be delivered by Ms Lisa Hanle (UNFCCC), Ms Milena Gonzalez Vasquez (GEF), Mr Pascal Martinez (GEF) and Ms Rocío Cóndor-Golec (FAO). The event will be moderated by Mr Khalil Walji (FAO) and by Ms Cristina Petracchi (FAO).

Lisa Hanle is currently leading the newly established Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) Coordination Unit in the Transparency Division of the UNFCCC. The focus of her activities is to coordinate and facilitate secretariat-wide efforts on the development and implementation of the new ETF under the Paris Agreement and to promote comprehensive and consistent engagement on the ETF with external audiences. Lisa has over 20 years of experience working at the national and the international level on reporting and review activities related to national GHG inventories, biennial reports, and biennial update reports, as well as accounting for project-based activities, under the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol.  Lisa holds a Masters Degree in International Relations and Economics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Milena Gonzalez is a Climate Change Specialist in the Programs Unit of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). She reviews climate change mitigation project proposals from countries in Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. She also works on topics related to the GEF’s role as a financial mechanism for the United Nations climate change convention (UNFCCC) including on climate finance, capacity-building, transparency and reporting. Milena joined the GEF in 2014. Prior to joining the GEF, she was a research associate in the Climate and Energy team at the Worldwatch Institute, where she analyzed renewable energy development in the Latin American region, among other topics. Milena holds a master’s in Civil and Environmental Engineering with a focus on Atmosphere and Energy and a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, both from Stanford University. She is from Mexico and Panama.

Pascal Martinez joined the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in 2015. Focusing on land uses and particularly forests and agriculture, he contributes to the implementation of GEF strategy supporting development countries to meet their commitments in the framework of international environmental agreements. He also coordinates GEF work on Sustainable Forests Management and he is actively engaged in the implementation of the new GEF-7 Impact Programs “Food Systems, land use and restoration”. Over the past 20 years, he had the opportunity to develop activities in different areas of the natural resources management and the environment, notably in the following areas: forestry, biodiversity, agriculture and climate change. He worked for the private sector, French Ministries and Embassies, and international organizations. Pascal holds a Master in Forestry and a Master in  Ecosystems.

Rocío Cóndor-Golec is leading the "Building global capacity to increase transparency in the forest sector (CBIT-Forest)” global project of the FAO financed by the CBIT trust fund of the GEF. She is coordinating activities to make forest data more transparent, accessible and available and helping developing countries meet the Paris Agreement's enhanced transparency framework (ETF), in collaboration with key international stakeholders. Rocío has 20 years of experience working at the national and the international level on measurement, reporting and verification under the UNFCCC and currently supporting the ETF implementation at the FAO. Rocio holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Science and a PhD in Forest Ecology.

Cristina Petracchi heads the FAO elearning Academy. She manages and coordinates the design, development, delivery and language adaptations of an extensive portfolio of elearning courses and blended learning programmes for the benefit of FAO member countries, and is responsible for the creation of University Masters' and Post Graduate Degree Programmes. She engages actively in consolidating partnerships across United Nations agencies, academic institutions and universities, regional organizations, CSOs and NGOs, for capacity development initiatives. In addition to a University Degree in Biological Sciences, Ms Petracchi holds a PhD in Nutrition and Food Science, and has several years of experience of capacity development activities, in a number of countries.

Khalil Walji works as capacity development specialist within the FAO Forestry Department where he focuses on a wide range of topics from People and Forests to Ecosystem restoration monitoring. He joined the CBIT-Forest project Team in 2020, with a focus knowledge management and youth engagement. Khalil holds a masters’ in Integrated studies of Land and Food Systems with a focus on nitrogen cycling,  and a bachelors’ in Natural Resources Conservation with a focus on forests, both from The University of British Columbia. He is from Canada.
