The Department of Forest Sciences, Institute of International Forestry
and Forest Products, Chair of Tropical Forestry, is offering a
Doctoral Scholarship
for research on: “Trees as loan collateral for production-driven forest
landscape restoration”.
The scholarship value is 1,200 Euro per month with a possible funding
period of 36 months.
Location: The doctoral student will be based at the Institute of
International Forestry and Forest Products at TU Dresden, cooperating
with the BMUB IKI project "Production-driven forest landscape
restoration under REDD+ through private sector - community partnerships
as Asian-regional learning exchange", with several and prolonged stays
in the project sites in Thailand and Laos, respectively.
Project description: The research project, funded by the International
Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment,
Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), aims to develop
partnerships between communities and the private sector to restore
degraded forests in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, and thus improving the
livelihood of the rural people. Locally adapted business models between
smallholders and the private sector are investigated, supported by NGOs,
local governments and universities. Research is planned in the broad
framework of the climate policy of "Reducing Emissions from
Deforestation and Forest Degradation" (REDD +).
Tasks: The doctoral student will do research on teak wood production
systems under the above cited working title with a country-specific
focus on Thailand and Laos, respectively. The topic may be further
specified within the project scope, considering the candidate’s
background and interest, and guidance of the supervisor Prof. Dr. habil.

Requirements: Applicants should have a master’s degree with good or
excellent grades in forestry, (natural resources) economics or other
disciplines related to the proposed research. Research / work experience
in the tropics or subtropics, with preference in SE Asia, and scientific
publications are an asset. Proficiency in English is required, other
languages (Thai, Lao, German) are an advantage, as well as good
intercultural communication skills and social competence, preferably in
an Asian context. The successful candidate should be highly motivated
and willing to spend several months in the research sites.
