The sinking of Jakarta: Climate Change and the uncertain future of humanity

Jorge Rebagliati

APR 25, 2018 — Dear friends:

As we showed you in a previous update, Jakarta and its Greater Area, home to 30 million people, is sinking and being flooded. The main reasons: sea level rise curtesy of man-induced Climate Change and the water wells of Jakarta that are draining the aquifer under the city.

Here some highlights form the article below:

"With climate change, the Java Sea is rising and weather in Jakarta is becoming more extreme. Earlier this month, another freakish storm briefly turned the Indonesian capital's streets into rivers and brought this vast area of nearly 30 million residents to a virtual halt.

In fact, Jakarta is sinking faster than any other big city on the planet, faster, even, than climate change is causing the sea to rise - so surreally fast that rivers sometimes flow upstream, ordinary rain regularly swamps neighborhoods and buildings slowly disappear underground, swallowed by the earth.

The main cause: Jakartans are digging illegal wells, drip by drip draining the underground aquifers on which the city rests - like deflating a giant cushion underneath it.

The main cause: Jakarta's are digging illegal wells, drip by drip draining the underground aquifers on which the city rests - like deflating a giant cushion underneath it. About 40 per cent of Jakarta now lies below sea level.

Hydrologists say the city has only a decade to halt its sinking. If it cannot, northern Jakarta, with its millions of residents, will end up underwater, along with much of the nation's economy."

The take-home message is: Wherever you live in the world, your area (like Jakarta) will experience extraordinary environmental disasters that you are not forcefully trying to prevent and that you are not preparing for.

IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO GREEN OUR PERSONAL LIVES AND PARTICIPATE IN SOME SIDE PROJECT RELATED TO CLIMATE CHANGE. ONLY SOCIETYWIDE AND ECONOMYWIDE TRANSFORMATIONS CAN DEAL WITH CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS CONSEQUENCES. OUR COMMUNITIES MUST REORGANIZE TO LIVE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE TO SURVIVE AND PROSPER. HUMANS MUST STOP BEING LIKE CANCER CELLS THAT IN THE PROCESS OF GROWING AND MULTIPLYING ARE KILLING THE BODY WITHOUT WHICH THEY CAN NOT LIVE.

Promote this petition and move your community to transform now.
