The meetings began Sunday with Xi Jinping delivering a report to the congress on behalf of the 19th CPC Central Committee. Xi cited the historic feats made by the party over the past 10 years including:

·  Honoring the 100th anniversary of the founding of the party

·  Ushering a new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics

·  Eradicating absolute poverty

He said the party will continue with its goals to advance the nation through a Chinese path to modernization which includes pursuing high-quality development, invigorating China through science and education, and improving the people's well-being.

On Taiwan

In his report President Xi said the party will implement its overall policy for resolving the Taiwan question in the new era and unswervingly advance the cause of national reunification

"We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort, but we will never promise to renounce the use of force, and we reserve the option of taking all measures necessary," Xi said. "This is directed solely at interference by outside forces and the few separatists seeking 'Taiwan independence' and their separatist activities; it is by no means targeted at our Taiwan compatriots."

Xi said they have always shown respect and care for their Taiwan compatriots and will continue to promote economic and cultural exchanges across the Taiwan Straits and that they encourage both sides of the straits to work together and forge closer bonds.
