COP23: California Leadership on Display

Dear Jon,
Greetings from Bonn, where a key focus at COP23 is on U.S. states, cities and businesses -- and on California in particular.

Governor Brown has been named U.N. Special Envoy for States and Regions, and California businesses, investors, mayors and lawmakers from up and down the Golden State have shown up in droves to say We Are Still In.

And we’re not just here to demonstrate support for climate action. We’re showcasing our leadership as well.

California companies like Autodesk, Facebook and Apple for example, have committed to 100% renewable energy. Apparel companies like Gap, Patagonia and Levi’s are leading on water management and supply chain sustainability. And our investors like CalSTRS and CalPERS are pushing for widespread adoption of climate risk disclosure.

One California business of particular note -- Fetzer Vineyards – will even receive the Momentum for Change award from the U.N. at COP23 for becoming the first U.S winery to achieve net zero emissions.

For more on California’s climate leadership and the role Ceres plays, read a recent post from our partners at the Skoll Foundation.

I’ve assembled a panel that will take place today at the U.S. Climate Action Center, in which Governor Brown and executives from PG&E, Fetzer and Kaiser Permanente will discuss The Business Case for Advancing Strong Climate Leadership and Policy in California. I’ll also be speaking on November 13th on a panel moderated by Christiana Figueres called Stepping Up for the Global Climate Action Summit.

Follow along as we showcase California and U.S. leadership on our Twitter feed, and watch our live stream of important events on the Ceres Facebook page.

As Californians, we have a special role to play in the global fight against climate change. I’m proud of all we’ve accomplished and I’m looking forward to continued leadership to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.

Thank you,

Kirsten James
Director, California Policy
