In the past 60 years, the land surface temperature in China has risen by 1.38 degrees Celsius, which is higher than the global average, reported The Paper. Climate change is causing a reduction in river runoff and surface water resources, but temperatures increases are also adding to water demand, according to the findings from the FRIEND Network (Flow Regime from International Experimental and Network Data). Zhang Jianyun, president of Nanjing Academy of Water Resources Sciences and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that long-lasting high-temperature weather may become common, aggravating water shortages. Zhang suggested that energy efficiency and carbon emission reductions are urgently needed to slow down climate change, and that adaptive strategies need exploring.
