The southern China metropolis of Shenzhen has rolled out a campaign to make garbage classification a mandatory practice among the city’s 12 million residents, reported Yang Cheng Evening News. The city has come up with a sophisticated system that divides rubbish into six types. An illustrated guide to classifying and disposing of garbage has been created, which the municipal government will distribute. The municipal government also expects to install garbage collection points and pair them with professional garbage transport and processing companies by the end of October. Individuals failing to dispose of garbage correctly will face a penalty of 50 yuan (about US$7), while garbage treatment companies mixing waste types will be fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,470).
