China-U.S. diplomacy ramps up

May 12, 2023

It was a week of high-level diplomacy between China and the United States.

Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi held two days of talks in Vienna with President Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan.

China’s Foreign Ministry says the meetings were “candid, in-depth, substantive and constructive” and focused on removing obstacles in Chinese-U.S. relations and on ways to stabilize the relationship from deterioration.

Wang Yi elaborated on China’s position on Taiwan, and the two sides exchanged views on the Asia-Pacific region and Ukraine.

Sullivan has said the United States wants to “de-risk and diversify” its relationship with China, not decouple. CGTN special commentator Jiang Shisong discusses that here.

Earlier in the week, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang met with U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns in Beijing. Qin told the ambassador that China-U.S. relations are not only significant for the two countries but for the whole world.

More headlines:

· Qin Gang left for a European trip that has taken him to ParisBerlin, and Oslo. China's effort to end the Ukraine conflict figured prominently.

· China is sending its special envoy on the Ukraine crisis to Europe next week. Li Hui will visit Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany and Russia starting May 15.

· U.S. Ambassador Burns met with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao on Thursday and exchanged views on Sino-U.S. trade.
