How to save our high seas


Hey Jon,

The high seas are home to a dazzling range of wildlife – from the majestic blue whale to tiny plankton. Its ecosystems include acrid smoking vents and deep sea coral reefs that support some of the most fascinating animals imaginable. 

Unfortunately, only 1% of this vast area is currently protected, and safeguarding it is far from easy. The high seas are already heavily utilized for activities such as fishing, shipping, and extractive industries, and regulations are not always followed. As a result, ocean ecosystems and species are at risk of being harmed by pollution and destructive fishing methods, especially in areas which are hundreds of miles away from shore.

The high seas have been neglected for too long. To make a change, leaders and decision-makers need to agree on a high seas treaty. Watch as Sir David Attenborough explains how we should all work together globally to ensure our high seas thrive:
