Hanoi Social Club
6 Hoi Vu Str, Hanoi

From the organizer:
World traditions. Story-telling through music. Indigenous instruments from Vietnam and abroad. This is Limited Edition Tradition, the newest event from The Hanoi Social Club – a monthly exploration of global sounds with guest musicians from Cao Bang, Pleiku, Morocco, Africa, The Middle East and more.
Each month brings a different flavour, a new eye-opening style of the communication of emotions connected to the history of people across the world. Expect to see instruments such as the guimbri, oud, ty ba, doumbrek, tam thập lục, a wide range of hand percussion and other esoterica.
In our previous session we were lucky enough to have Minh Duong, a musician-lecturer from his university’s faculty of traditional and ethnic arts, playing traditional air instruments such as the Hmong flute and đàn môi. This time, we are very lucky to have Tih Ro Cham, from the Jarai minority, all the way from Pleiku. Tih is a multi-instrumentalist who will be bringing with him the dan k’ni – like a violin that has it’s pitch adjusted by resonant-cavity mouth movements. Totally unique and a sound which can evoke nostalgia, yearning and loss.
And of course we have our other regular musicians from around Vietnam and the globe playing songs that come from the Gnawa culture of northern Africa.
The line-up this month is:
Amine Canamine – guimbri, vocals
Hà Đình Huy – Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, world percussion
David Payne – electric guitar
Thái Hà Đàm – dan ty ba
Minh Dương – Hmong air instruments, vocals
Moshen Abdullah – African percussion
Tĩh Ro Châm – dan k’ni, dan ting ning, vocals
Sometimes hypnotic, sometimes uplifting, sometimes healing – come see Limited Edition Tradition for quality music outside your typical genres.
