Mongabay's Newest Investigative Reporting Series

Dear Mongabay readers and supporters,

Have you seen some of our recent investigative reporting? Our Impact Fund empowers us to remain flexible and report on topics that positively influence conservation efforts around the world. Our goal is to provide actionable, solutions-oriented conservation news and analysis.  Some of our recent reporting really stands out:
Do you think you “know” palm oil? The Palm Oil Fiefdom is the first installment in a deep investigative series on how local officials in Indonesia grant concessions to turn forests into plantations. The first piece explores the complexity of how land deals get done. Our team spent nearly a year working with Earthsight combing company records, doing field visits, and conducting interviews and the outcome speaks for itself.
Thankfully, there are lots of people that want to chip in and help preserve our planet for future generations – but what is the best way to accomplish this goal?  "Conservation Effectiveness" is a multi-part series investigating the effectiveness of some of the most popular strategies to conserve tropical forests around the world. The series is the result of a collaboration between Mongabay staff reporters Shreya Dasgupta and Mike Gaworecki, and a team of conservation scientists led by tropical forest ecologist Zuzana Burivalova of Princeton University.
If you are reading this newsletter, I’m sure we can all agree that Madagascar is a true marvel of nature. This incredible country has received more than $700 million in international funding for conservation since 1990, arrayed across more than 500 projects, yet the overall trajectory across the country still seems to be towards rapid declines in biodiversity and natural landscapes. “Conservation in Madagascar” is an in-depth series by Rowan Moore Gerety that digs into the reasons behind the successes and failures of conservation projects across the highly biodiverse island. Moore Gerety criss-crossed Madagascar this summer visiting conservation sites and speaking with Malagasy people and conservationists about their experiences in this eye-opening series.
