Fifty-six people have been found dead and a further 22 reported missing after heavy rainstorms wreaked havoc in southern China, reported Hunan Daily. According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, 11 million people were affected by heavy rain, hail, flooding and landslides that have plagued more than ten provinces since late June.

A total of 27,000 houses were torn down by the natural disasters, and direct economic loss has amounted to 25 billion yuan (US$3.7 billion). Central China’s Hunan province has been hardest hit, with nearly 7 million people affected and 34 killed. Xiangjiang River, where most of Hunan’s floods originated, saw water levels rise to the highest ever recorded in its history earlier in early July.
