Forest monitoring with a smartphone app: PLCN, Cambodia releases new report

Dear all,

I'm writing to you on behalf of the Prey Lang Community Network (PLCN) from Cambodia.
As those of you who follow the project know, PLCN is a grassroots environmental group of patrollers that came together to battle deforestation in Cambodia. Supported by many regional and international NGOs, institutions and universities, PLCN is armed with a specially designed smart phone application to monitor valuable resources and threats to their forest.

PLCN were lately awarded the Energy Globe national award for utilising innovative solution to protect their forest.

PLCN's new 8th Monitoring report highlights the ongoing deforestation that is happening inside and around the boundaries of Prey Lang (= Our Forest). However days after the release, the Govt of Cambodia is restricting even more the patrolling of PLCN, by requiring permits to be issued prior to any patrol. Meanwhile the Govt rejects the findings based on the data gathered from intense patrolling, on the ground that the network is not officially registered with the Ministry of Interior.

Please for your information find this report in this link:  https://preylang.net/2020/01/29/the-latest-status-of-prey-lang-the-8th-monitoring-report/ PLCN is seeking meaningful collaborations to form strategies that will allow the real protection of their ancestral lands.

A brief video regarding the release of the report and the reactions of the govt can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLxF4WEwjYQ&feature=youtu.be
Please do not hesitate, to circulate in your networks or contact for more information. PLCN would appreciate your reference to the source in case of reproduction of the material.

Best wishes,
