Stay Connected - Unstoppable worldwide movement

Hi Jon,

Welcome back to a very special edition of Stay Connected, your regular round up of all the latest Greenpeace news. From celebrating our 50th birthday, to sailing down the Thames in a flotilla - here’s a round up of everything we’ve been up to lately that you might have missed.

Happy reading, and thanks for making all this possible!

It was 50 years ago that a small group of ordinary people set sail from Canada in their fishing boat “The Greenpeace” to try and stop a US nuclear weapons test in Alaska.

And since that founding voyage, we’ve grown from a handful of people, to an unstoppable worldwide movement of millions – and together we’ve confronted the biggest global environmental threats of the last 50 years.

We wanted to use this moment to thank you for everything you do to make the world a better place – from signing petitions, to donating, to scaling oil rigs – nothing changes without youLet’s celebrate together, watch this special video featuring Sherma, Mark and other supporters just like you.

Have you ever wanted to see what other Greenpeace supporters look like? Or maybe you’ve always wanted your photo to feature alongside the likes of Emma Thompson, Caroline Lucas and Bonnie Wright? Well now’s your chance to do both.

We’ve created an amazing mosaic made up of photos of thousands of supporters just like you. It’s a chance to put names and faces to all the people we are campaigning alongside and to be inspired by other people's messages of their hopes for the future. Add your name, photo and message of hope now.

Greenpeace supporters have been telling us for a while that they really want Greenpeace T-shirts, and now we’ve delivered. We’re excited to be working with a company that meets our high standards to produce Greenpeace t-shirts again.

The t-shirts are made from organic cotton, avoiding the use of toxic chemicals, printed in real time to order so there’s no overproduction and made using renewable energy - and the workers are paid a fair wage too.

With 18 designs to choose from, we hope you’ll be able to find one you can wear with pride. Get your t-shirt now.

We know we can’t fix the climate crisis without addressing racial injustice and inequality - which is why this is just one burning issue we’re unpacking this October to mark Black History Month in the UK.

We know that people of colour are far more likely to experience the catastrophic effects of climate breakdown - this has been the case for some time and will only get worse as the crisis intensifies. And not only that, the people most affected by the climate crisis are also much less likely to have contributed to the problem in the first place.

If you want to know more watch our video ‘Is climate change racist?’ - yes, we know our video title may evoke mixed reactions but we suggest watching through to the end to find out the answer, who’s to blame and what can be done about it. And keep your eyes peeled for more Black History Month content on our website and social media channels for you to watch and share.

As the effect of the gas price shock starts to seep into the lives of ordinary people causing bills to rise, energy suppliers to go bust and supermarket shelves to empty – many will be left wondering how we got here, and what’s the best way forward? Read the blog to find out how the UK’s reliance on gas turned an energy furore into an energy crisis and what needs to happen to get us out of this mess.

One thing is for sure: we need to switch to cleaner, greener heating. But according to insiders, Chancellor Rishi Sunak is blocking green investment in the upcoming Autumn budget. Help us pressure Sunak to step up - join thousands of others and send a postcard to your MP now to fight for a greener, cleaner future.

In August we released the video Tesco’s Burning Secret. With over half a million views, the video spread like wildfire across the internet, exposing the dodgy deals the supermarket makes with forest-destroying companies.

No company should be making a profit from burning Amazon rainforest. As well as being a rainforest that spans across nine countries and is home to a million Indigenous People, it’s the most biodiverse place on earth – and crucial to protect in the fight against climate change.

To continue to apply the pressure on the supermarket, we're taking our message directly to key decision makers. Email Ken Murphy, Tesco’s CEO and demand they stop doing business with forest-destroying companies.

Last month, Greenpeace and fishing communities joined forces to make history, sailing up the Thames to Westminster to deliver an urgent message - and a petition signed by 520,000 of you - straight to the government: protect our oceans now.

Over the summer Greenpeace ran Operation Ocean Witness, to document destruction in supposedly protected areas along the South Coast and learned from fishermen that the situation was worse than we could have imagined.

Huge industrial fishing boats spend hours fishing in UK Marine Protected Areas every year - destroying marine life and leaving local fishing communities with nothing left to catch. And the UK Government lets them - watch and share this video with your MP.

What we're enjoying this month:

Remember, we want to stay connected with you; whether you have a question about Greenpeace's work or your support, we're here to help. My team is available to call on 0330 335 3632 Monday – Friday, 9am – 5.30pm, or feel free to email any questions you may have to supporter.uk@greenpeace.org

Together we are Greenpeace and we can and will achieve many more amazing things.

Be safe and be well.
