We must restore and strengthen the Endangered Species Act

Defend the law that protects the vulnerable

Ask President Biden to restore and strengthen the Endangered Species Act

Dear Jon,

Scientists around the world have sounded the extinction crisis alarm, which is currently threatening nearly one million species with extinction.

But there’s reason for hope. That’s because when the safety net that is the Endangered Species Act is deployed, we can bring species back from the brink of extinction and put them on a path toward recovery.

In fact, the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) has prevented more than 99% of species protected by the Act from going extinct over the past four decades, including iconic species that Guardians and you have worked tirelessly to defend—grizzly bears, gray wolves, ocelots, Mexican spotted owls, yellow-billed cuckoos, and Chinook salmon.

Unfortunately, the previous administration took a sledgehammer to many essential components of the ESA that made it so successful in protecting imperiled wildlife and plants from extinction.

The Biden administration represents a huge opportunity to reverse course, restore the profound damage inflicted on the Endangered Species Act, and strengthen this critical safety net for our most vulnerable species.

You’ve been at our side every step of the way in defense of endangered species, so join me in urging President Biden to restore, strengthen, and defend the Endangered Species Act. For many species, their future survival depends on the actions you take today.

For the Wild,

John Horning, Executive Director
