Fresh from the Forest Garden 🌿

Trees for the Future December Newsletter

Jon,

We’ve seen so many inspiring displays of generosity this Giving Season and we’re not even halfway through December!
We are so thankful for your support and selflessness in helping our planet and its people. If you’ve already given, take a look at what your donations make possible. If you haven’t given yet, consider this newsletter as a promise of what we can accomplish together.

Fresh From the Forest Garden

Farmers are Regenerating their Soil

Healthy soil is at the foundation of farmer success, that's why it is the first thing we focus on when establishing a Forest Garden. Monocropping and destructive practices like using chemicals and slash-and-burn leaches soil of nutrients and moisture, and it is ultimately blown or washed away. Today, we have lost 70% of global topsoil, but Forest Garden farmers are changing that. Read more.

Planting Trees the Right Way

Forest Garden farmers and our collaborating partners successfully planted 20 million trees in 2019. While that number is impressive, it’s important to remember that there is more to tree planting than simply digging a hole. The farmers we work with are learning how to be good stewards of their land, which means taking the time to strategically plant and care for their trees and crops. Read more.

Meet a TREES Farmer

Senegalese farmer Ndeye was farming maize, millet, and peanut before she joined TREES. She was working endlessly to make less than a dollar a day. But she had seen the success other farmers in her area were having with the Forest Garden Approach and wanted to be a part of it. TREES was not yet working in her village at the time, so Ndeye set out to change that. Read the story of how she made that happen.
We can't do any of this without your support, Jon.
Be sure to make your tax-deductible donation before the end of the year.

Thank you to Addie and Greyson Fisher!

The work that Trees for the Future does is necessary not only for us today, but also for future generations. We love being a part of something so big, but that also reminds us that the Earth is our one home to share together.” - Addie
Addie began supporting TREES when she asked her three-year-old son Greyson what he wanted for his birthday and his response was “Let’s plant trees!”

They had a TREES fundraiser for his third birthday and now Addie is a proud ambassador of TREES helping to share our message with her own community.

Cheers to Trinity Oaks

TREES Senegal Country Coordinator Fatoumata Diedhou was Awarded SRI's 30 Under 30 and she was featured on Africa.com.

Our piece on soil regeneration was in Modern Ghana.

Wired Magazine published an article on our partner Ecosia and our work planting trees together.

The UN Climate Change Conference COP25

Before we go, it is important to note the conversations taking place in Madrid over the past two weeks. As world leaders gather to discuss how to handle climate change, we see many circling the issue and the ultimate solution:  in order to effectively fight global warming, we must end poverty and change how we engage in the global food system.

As Time's Person of the Year Greta Thunberg said, "We can't save the world by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change - and it has to start today.” Trees for the Future is changing everything through the Forest Garden Approach and our strategic plan.  Will you join us?
