At Yale Environment 360 this week, our contributing writer Nicole Jones explores how artificial intelligence is sparking a revolution in weather forecasting. With A.I., forecasts that once required huge teams of experts and massive supercomputers can be made on a laptop. These new forecasts are, by leaps and bounds, faster, cheaper, and easier to produce than conventional forecasts and, in most cases, more accurate too. While questions remain about A.I.’s reliability and its ability to predict extreme weather, the technology is improving rapidly. Says a meteorologist, “This field is just moving at a ridiculous speed." Read Jones’s article.
Also at e360, we are now accepting entries for our 12th annual film contest, which honors the best environmental films from around the world. Joining me on the contest judging panel will be Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Kolbert and Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Thomas Lennon.
