At Yale Environment 360 today, journalist Janet Marinelli reports on the race to save endangered plants in botanical garden “metacollections.” With the impacts of climate change and other threats mounting, botanists are working to preserve plant species this way in the hope of eventually returning them to the wild. As the planet warms, tens of thousands of plants may require this kind of intensive care, experts say. Increasingly, though, conservationists are realizing that in many cases, there may not be any suitable habitat to return them to.
