Dear Jon,
This week, we saw a surge in positive momentum in Congress for ending the violence and suffering that continues to deepen in Gaza. Two members of Congress—Sen. Rafeal Warnock (GA) and House Foreign Affairs Committee member Rep. Madeleine Dean (PA-04)—released strong statements supporting a ceasefire.
Fifty members of Congress led by Representatives André Carson (IN-07), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), and Jamie Raskin (MD-08), echoed our calls to urgently restore vital humanitarian funding to UNRWA. This –U.N. agency serves as a lifeline to millions of people in Gaza facing unspeakable conditions.
Outside of Washington, new polling shows that on overwhelming majority of Americans across the political divide support a ceasefire and imposing conditions on U.S. military aid to Israel.
Our collective advocacy continues to make a real impact. But we must persevere. As pressure continues to mount, President Joe Biden indicated that the administration is working to secure a short-term ceasefire and hostage release agreement. The release of hostages and providing a window of relief for those in Gaza would be a very welcome step.
But the prospects of these talks remain uncertain. Only a permanent ceasefire can allow for the massive level of humanitarian relief that is needed to save tens of thousands of lives in Gaza.
