What’s a Chinook salmon?
A long journey home against harrowing odds, all for the sake of family. Maybe
this sounds like your travel plan this week, but it’s also true for Chinook
salmon! These remarkable fish spend years in the sea before beginning their
legendary migrations from the ocean to the home rivers where they were born!
Where can they be found?
Chinook salmon range from California to Alaska, and even as far across the
Pacific as Northern Japan. The important question isn’t so much where they can
be found as where they’re missing: While many populations are healthy and
plentiful, Chinook salmon in the Northwest have been decimated by dams on the
rivers they call home!
Okay, so?
As many of us are working up an appetite for a feast, the Salish sea is full of
some very hungry orcas. Southern Resident orcas depend on Chinook salmon for
survival. Their fates are tied together, and it’s up to us to stop these
species from disappearing!
How can I help?
The good news is there's a plan to end the salmon famine! We're working with regional leaders too restore the river systems that salmon and orcas both depend on for survival. Your support will help us bring back the bounty of salmon to the Northwest!
