Bui Xuan Phai – For the Love of Hanoi award (Work category) goes to the exhibition of the work of American photographer William Crawford October 5, 2023

Bui Xuan Phai - For the Love of Hanoi Award Ceremony, Hanoi 05 Oct 2023

Art Vietnam Gallery is thrilled and honored to announce that our exhibition for the Hanoi Photo ’23 Biennale with Manzi Art Space of American photographer William Crawford works, Hanoi Streets 1985-2015 - In the Years of Forgetting, has won the Bui Xuan Phai – For the Love of Hanoi award in the Work category.

This is an immeasurable honor for the artist William Crawford and for Manzi and Art Vietnam Gallery, for which we are so grateful. Bui Xuan Phai is one of the most revered artists in Vietnamese art history. Known for his humble and yet profound works expressing the beauty and charm of his beloved Hanoi, his family initiated this prize in his honor in 2008, 20 years after he passed away in 1988. 2023 marks the 16th year of this prize and it comes at the same time of the memorable state visit of the US President Biden to Hanoi and the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US, elevating the two countries to the highest level of diplomacy and cooperation.

William Crawford was one of the first Americans to come to Hanoi after the end of the war in 1985. He was so moved by the beauty of the city, people, and culture, he came back to Hanoi for 3 decades, with his large format camera, documenting the life in the streets, the everyday rituals of life and the beauty of the ancient streets and housing in Hanoi. His photographs depict his profound love of the people and the country.
