The plight of the fire-furred panda
High up in the Himalayan mountains, you might think that a red
panda would live a quiet, peaceful life. Perhaps curled up, safely snuggled in its
soft tail, or maybe feasting on
bamboo, its only concern being to keep a watchful eye out for any hungry
predators on the prowl.
But the fact is, these
gentle creatures have far, far bigger problems to deal with.
Illegal loggers have invaded their once-tranquil forest home, wreaking havoc on the entire ecosystem.
The very trees that
red pandas sleep in are being torn down from under them.
The bamboo forests
that they feast on are being slashed to pieces, with heavy tarmac roads being built in their
place.
And these roads make a
bad situation even worse, providing easy access for hunters who enter the
forest with one thing in mind.
To kill as many red
pandas as they can find.
Driven by a needless
desire for their fur, these adorable, innocent creatures are being targeted for
a gut-wrenching reason: to be turned into fluffy fashion pieces.
It’s sickening.
Their population has declined by over 50% in less than three
decades.
And the final straw is
that most of this goes completely unnoticed by most of the world. All too
often red pandas are overshadowed by their black-and-white counterpart, the
giant panda.
But at Fauna & Flora, we won’t overlook them.
We’re creating
community-managed no-hunting zones where populations of red pandas and other
endangered wildlife can begin to recover, under the protection of dedicated
rangers.
But we need your help
to do more if we are to have a hope of saving them.
With your support, we
can put more rangers out in the field to conduct patrols and stop the illegal
activity that is destroying the red panda's home.
We can continue
working alongside local communities and partners to help ensure greater
protection for red pandas.
If red pandas are lost
from the planet, we’ll not only lose an incredibly unique species, but it’ll
signify a catastrophic decline in the health of the Himalayan forests and all
the species that live there.
So please donate today, before red pandas quietly vanish from the planet.
SAVING RED PANDAS IN MYANMAR
Please help save red pandas. If everyone reading this donates just $3, we could provide rangers with the equipment they need to continue patrolling their forest home, including boots, camping gear and rations.
