Natural gas has edged out coal as the leading source of electricity in the US, based on a New York Times analysis of every state's generation mix between 2001 and 2017.  But each state has its own story, and experts warn that a shift to natural gas alone won't be enough to avoid dangerous global warming.  Some states have made the move to natural gas. Others have strongly embraced renewables like wind and solar. And others are still very heavily dependent on coal.
